I have played many games throughout my life, mainly RPGs and JRPGs. Chrono Trigger is honestly one of my favorite games I’ve ever played, with Legend of Dragoon and Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings of the Lost Ocean behind it. If you are aware of these three games, you’d know that Japanese writers and designers had a hand in them. In my honest opinion, they were great games, but over the years I noticed how the characters of many games made by Asian companies, especially the main characters, looked nothing like an Asian man or woman. The first few times I shrugged it off, but in 2015 I came to a realization in how often that trend showed up. Even when I played games where I could create a character, I struggled to make a character that I was okay with saying “That looks like me!”
I have seen stories of other black people having gripes about not seeing diversity in games like The Sims, and later creating mods to remedy that situation.
What bothers me about that is that it only remedies a situation, not the supposed problem itself.
Instead of making mods to feel better about what you’re looking at, instead of making characters that historically been white and changing them to another race, why not just create characters that spring from your own mind instead? Although I haven’t shown the world what I’ve created yet, I smile when I’ve made a main character that I can envision who is black, from the sketch pad that is my mind. Creating video games or content on your own terms is a solution.
It’s much more fulfilling to create than to modify. Try it sometime.
